Receiving the Resurrection like Mary (Day 23 of the Resurrection)

Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.

They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?”

“They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.” At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus.

He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?”

Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.”

16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.”

She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”).

John 20:11-16

I have never thought of it before but when Jesus spoke Mary’s name, it was the first word He spoke after He rose from the dead. Someone’s name…the first utterance out of the resurrected Christ! Why should we be surprised? He was and is all about people, all about us.

Jesus has been resurrected for me and for you. If we are going to be resurrection people, living incarnationally in this world, we must receive Christ’s resurrection personally. We don’t have to understand everything about it to receive…but in order for it to be a transformative revelation we must open ourselves to a belief in the resurrection for ourselves.

Prayer Exercise: Lectio Divina

Read the scripture passage out loud. Notice what word or phrase stands out to you. (Hold some silence.)

Read the scripture passage out loud a second time. Is any other thought, word or concept added to it? (Hold some silence.)

Read the scripture passage out loud a third time. How does what stood out to you connect with your present life? Is God impressing an invitation on your heart? (Hold some silence.)

Talk to God out of this time with His Word. But first, take some time to be silent and imagine Jesus calling your name.
